A few points worth remembering from a recent short course on retirement issues:

• diversify!
• define goals and write them down, e.g.:
  • retirement
  • education
  • parental care
  • estate
  • major purchases
• don't try to "time the market"
• consider long-term care insurance
• consider "life documents" such as:
  • power of attorney
  • health care wishes
  • will
• be realistic
• keep it simple

And I learned a funny new term: Slash Attorneys — lawyers who have lots of "slashes" in their advertisements: personal injury / divorce / workman's compensation / medical malpractice / DWI defense / etc.
